W. F. Stockwell Passes Away Monday, Final Rites on Wednesday

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church for William F. Stockwell, Sutherland pioneer who passed away Monday morning at the Reed nursing home at Hartley. Rev. L. W. Rowse had charge of the services, directed by the Baumgarten Funeral Home. Mrs. Phillip Jordan, with accompaniment by Mrs. Lyle Youde, sand "Still, Still With Thee" and "Abide With Me." Thos. Weale, Harold Gottsch, Chas. Aldred, Lloyd Gilbert, John Mangels and George Yocom were pallbearers. Mrs. Ella Peters and Mrs. Lloyd Gilbert had charge of the flowers. Interment was in Waterman cemetery. Mr. Stockwell, who celebrated his 92 birthday on Labor Day by going down town for the celebration had been in failing health for a long time. He was taken to the nursing home at Hartley on a week ago.

William F. Stockwell, the son of James and Hannah Stockwell, was born at Strawberry Point, Iowa, on September 6, 1856. He passed away on October 25, 1948, at the Reed Nursing Home, Hartley, Iowa, at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 19 days. His early life was spent near his birthplace and he attended schools there. He moved to this vicinity in 1881 and has since made his home here with the exception of 5 years that he lived on the Pacific coast. He has been a member of the Methodist church since 1900.

On March 16, 1898, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Sophia Williams. She preceded him in death in February 1940. He was born the fifth child of a family of 8 children, all of whom preceded him in death.

Surviving are four stepchildren, John, Charles, and Mary Williams of Sutherland, and T. R. Williams of St. Paul, Minn., besides several nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.
