Lawrence L. Feyerabend, age 87, of Sanborn, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at South Texas Veteran’s Health Care System in San Antonio, Texas. Funeral Services will be Friday, April 2, 2010, at 1:30 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church in Sanborn, Iowa. Rev. Greg Johnson officiating. Burial in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. Lawrence Leonard Feyerabend was born on April 12, 1922, in Ollagaha, Oklahoma. He was the son of William and Hazel (Decker) Feyerabend. He lived his youth in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he attended school. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Vernon of Council Bluffs, Iowa, on December 13, 1941, in Omaha, Nebraska. They lived in Council Bluffs, where Lawrence worked for the railroad. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1945, when he was honorably discharged. He spent 8 months in Sweden as a P.O.W. He returned home and worked for the railroad and a flower shop. They moved to Pipestone, Minnesota, where he trained as a florist, by his sister. In 1949, they moved to Sheldon, Iowa, where he purchased the Sheldon Greenhouse. Lawrence and Dorothy owned and operated the Sheldon Greenhouse for many years. They also enjoyed going to the Boundary Waters canoeing for many years. They purchased the Hiway Nursery and operated it until 1987. Dorothy passed away on March 27, 1982. Lawrence sold Hiway Nursery to Randy and Lois Brinkman. He was united in marriage to Madonna Sterler of Ashton, Iowa, on January 12, 1996, in Sanborn, Iowa. They lived in Sanborn. Lawrence and Madonna enjoyed working for the Hiway Nursery and sold melons for many years. They enjoyed traveling and wintering in LaVernia, Texas. While Lawrence was in Texas, he enjoyed cutting trees, splitting wood, and helping his stepsons with their taxidermy business. Lawrence was a member of the Church of Christ. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Sanborn. He was a member of the National Florist Association, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Lawrence was a former city councilman. He was on the airport board for many years. He was on the horticulture board for Iowa Lakes Community College. He started the Garden Club of Sheldon and helped plan the Village Northwest Greenhouse. Lawrence wrote a weekly gardening article for the Sheldon Mail Sun. He passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at South Texas Veteran’s Care System in San Antonia, Texas. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Madonna Feyerabend of Sanborn, IA; 3 daughters and sons-in-law: Donna and Paul Voss of Lake Park, IA, Joan and Owen Yunker of Wentworth, SD, Judy and Scott Gaarder of Sibley, IA; son-in-law: Randy Brinkman of West Okoboji, IA; two stepsons: Dan and Becky Verrips of Adkins, TX, David and Lisa Verrips of LaVernia, TX; one stepdaughter: Darla and Pat Strait of Hartley, IA; 31 grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; one brother: William and Grayce Feyerabend of Ames, IA; 2 sisters: Shirley West of Columbus, KS, Albetine Dalgleish of Culpepper, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife: Dorothy; one daughter: Lois Brinkman; one sister: Doris Ludwig; one great-granddaughter: Catherine Jean Brinkman; one son-in-law: Brian Rueter.
