SHELDON—Donald "Toby" George Poss, 86, Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Sheldon, died Monday, June 28, at Waterford Assisted Living in Sioux Falls, SD.
Services were Friday, July 2, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon, with Father
Robert Schimmer officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery, with military rites by McGlothlen-Cowie Post 145 of the American Legion in Sheldon, under the direction of Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Donald "Toby " Poss, son of John and Anna (Osterholt) Poss, was born May 9, 1924, in Ashton. He received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Ashton. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific during World War II.
He married Laura McGrath on Feb.1, 1949, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon. They settled on a farm neau Ashton, where they farmed for many years. He was always proud of his dairy herd. They retired from farming in 1987, and moved to Sheldon. They remained in Sheldon until June 2005, when they moved to Waterford Assisted Living in Sioux Falls. Mrs. Poss died June 10, 2010.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon and a former member of Prairie Queen Kiwanis. He enjoyed woodcarving, playing cards, fishing, jig saw puzzles and drives in the country.
Survivors include three children, Daniel and Irene Poss of Sioux Falls, SD, Marilyn Hansen of Laurens, and Dianne and Randy Martens of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy McCabe of Iowa City and Roseanne Lindberg of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Poss; two sons, Richard Poss in infancy and Michael Poss; a grandson, Douglas Sangwin; a son-in-law, Mark Hansen; two brothers,
