Norman A. Groenenboom, age 89 of Sibley, IA died Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Country View Manor in Sibley, IA.
Memorial service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the First Reformed Church in Sibley, with Reverend Gary Van Heukelom officiating. Burial will take place prior to the service in the Richland Cemetery of Inwood, IA.
Visitation will be Monday, May 31, 2010 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Osceola County Hospice.
Norman Groenenboom was born on June 23, 1920 to Pete and Anna (Johnson) Groenenboom on the family farm near Inwood IA, later moving into Inwood. He graduated from Inwood High School in 1938 and in 1941 was named manager of the Quaker Oats Elevator in Inwood. Norm served in the European theater during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Upon his return from the army, he continued his role with Quaker Oats in Inwood. In 1955 he was transferred to Rock Rapids IA with Quaker and continued with them until the purchase of Quaker by Cargill Inc. He continued in his role of manager with Cargill until retiring in December 1979. After nearly forty years in the grain elevator business and a short retirement, he went to work for the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids and then the Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley until his health forced him to stop working in mid 2008.
In 1942 he married Mildred (Millie) Christensen of Inwood. Millie passed away in 1984. To this marriage a son, Dennis, Naperville IL and a daughter Lana, Monroeville NJ were born. In 1986 he married Jeanette (Nettie) Borgman of Sibley. Norm and Jeanette had made their home in Sibley for the past 24 years where both have been members of the First Reformed Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette, son Dennis (Carol), daughter Lana (Kenny) Seay, one granddaughter, two grandsons, three great grandchildren, four stepsons, four step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. His first wife, Millie, his parents, Pete and Anna and one sister, Glenara, preceded him in death.
