Orville Dwaine Wiersma, 83, Spencer, formerly of Sheldon, died Friday, March 19, at his
home.
Services were Tuesday, March 23, at Sanborn Funeral Home, with the Revs. Tom Van Tassel and Paul Hanson officiating. Burial will be at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn at a later date.
Orville Wiersma, son of Gerrit and Jennie (Kreykes) Wiersma, was born May 21, 1926, in Sanborn. He grew up in Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Beverly Bress on Nov. 23, 1950, in Sheldon. They made their home in Sheldon for most of their married life. He owned and operated Manilla Dry Cleaners and then worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier and postmaster at the Sheldon, Alvord and Sanborn post offices for 30 years, he retired in 1983. He and his wife traveled after their retirement for 18 years with a fifth-wheel trailer. They traveled to 48 contiguous states in the United States. They moved to an apartment in Spencer in 2000. He loved traveling and playing and visiting with his
children and grandchildren. He was active in the American Legion and Rural Mail Carrier Association.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Wiersma of Spencer; four children, Karen and Mike Brown of Sutherland, Cindy and Mark Prevo of Bloomfield, Julie and Todd Waterman of Milford, and Dennis Wiersma of Cherokee; and eight grandchildren
He was preceded in death e by a greatgrandson, Trevor; and two brothers, Jim Wiersma and Don Wiersma.
