Bill Hengeveld, age 84, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2011, at Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon.
William Hengeveld was born on February 4, 1926, in Sanborn, Iowa. He was the son of Henry W. and Aleida (Westerveld) Hengeveld. He lived his youth in Sanborn and Sheldon, Iowa, where he attended the Christian Grade Schools and graduated from Sheldon Christian Grade School. Bill served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 in the 76th Division of the 417th Infantry. Bill was part of General Patton’s 3rd Army and fought in the "Battle of the Bulge". He attained the rank of Tech Sergeant and was honorably discharged.
He was united in marriage to Catherine Westerman of Sanborn, Iowa, on June 23, 1949, in Sheldon, Iowa. They lived and farmed in rural Archer, Iowa, until 1958, when they moved to rural Sheldon, Iowa. Catherine passed away on November 16, 2000. Bill moved to town in September of 2008.
He was a very active member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon, where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He served on the Christian School Board and the Farmer’s Coop Oil Company Board. He was a member of the American Legion.
Bill was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed raising livestock. He had great affection for various pets over the years.
He enjoyed reading and traveling. He went on the Veterans Honor Flight to Washington, DC. He enjoyed the camaraderie. It meant a lot to him and was a great honor.
Bill will be remembered as a church and family man.
He passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2011, at Sanford Sheldon Senior Center in Sheldon.
Those left to cherish his memories are his children: Katha and Ron Petroelje of Holland, MI, Ken and Kim Hengeveld of Sheldon, IA, Laurie and Scott Vanden Bosch of Sioux Falls, SD, Joel and Julie Hengeveld of Sheldon, IA; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; one sister: Minnie De Hoogh of Sheldon, IA; one sister-in-law: Marjorie Hengeveld of Hartley, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Catherine; his parents; 4 brothers: Theodore and Nellie Hengeveld, John and Gertrude Hengeveld, Joe Hengeveld, Henry John Hengeveld; 2 sisters: Dora and Otto Postma, Alyda and Clarence Victoria.
