OBITUARY: Timothy Donohue

Timothy Donohue was born in Ireland in the year 1839 on July 12 and died in Sheldon on April 14, 1916, being 76 years, 9 months and two days old.
He immigrated with his parents to Canada at the age of 14, where he lived for six years and where met his future wife Miss Margaret Roche. They were married in Boston, Massachusetts in the year 1860 and of this union there were twelve children, six boys and six girls, also 21 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
He located in Iowa in the year of 1878 and has been a resident ever since having lived in Sheldon for the past thirteen years.

During his residence at Boston, he enlisted in Co. E, Third Mass Heavy Artillery where he served two years with honors.

He served as constable and deputy sheriff for twelve years at Negaunee, Michigan and was always active in public life.

He was elected to the Iowa Legislature and served with great credit to himself and constituents for the terms of 1900-1902. He was a true blue republican, was fearless in politics, as in community life or as a private citizen.
Of his immediate family, there is left is aged wife, Margaret, a true wife, friend , counselor and above all, a helpmate in every sense of the word as was shown in her untiring care of him as an invalid for nearly ten years duration.

His children are Mrs. Mike (“Mary”) Finn of Dallas, SD, J. Donohue and Mrs. S.C. (“Maggie”) White of Sheldon, F.M Donohue, deceased 12 years ago, Mrs. W. H. (“Catherine”) Beacom of Cottonwood, MN, D. W. Donohue, T.P. Donohue, J. H. Donohue, and Norah Donohue, all of Sheldon, Mrs. P. M. Sullivan (“Sarah”) of Colome, SD, and Mrs. J.J. (“Emily”) Barrett, of Willmar, MN, who mourn his loss and a son Henry died in infancy.

He was operated on for a cancerous growth of the stomach and has been a patient sufferer during a long illness. He was a true Christian, a loyal friend, a devoted father and the entire community shares his loss as witnessed by the large funeral, the floral offerings and the kind testimonials of near and far friends expressed in all forms of deepest and sincerest sympathy.

Funeral services were held at St. Patrick’s church on Monday at 10:00am. Father Mc Farley, of Emmetsburg, formerly in charge of the local parish, was master of ceremonies and preached the funeral sermon. Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Father McCormack assisted by Father Cooper of Sanborn, and Father McNally of Sibley. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery.

Consadine, Merrill, IA; Miss Nellie Kennedy, Worthington, MN; Mr. Patrick Hickey, Le Mars, IA; Mrs. Jane Donohue, Marshall, MN; Mr. and Mrs. George Gordon, LeMars, IA; Mrs. David Hancy, Meriden, IA; Mr. and Mrs. Michael Garvin, Marcus, IA; Mr. Walter Gordon, Cherokee, IA; Mr. and Mrs. Daniel McGrath, Mitchell, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Polk McGreath, Mitchell, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Barrett, Hampton, IA; Mr. and Mrs. Frank White, Sanborn, IA; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hart, Sanborn; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Helmer, Sanborn; Mr. Peter Swenson, Hartley; Mrs. James Sullivan, Mitchell, SD; Mr. Richard Boyd, Sanborn; Mr. C. P. Jackson, Sanborn; and Mr. Henry Geister, Primghar.
