Last rites for Mrs. Bessie H. Smith, 74, West Liberty, were held March 26 at the West Liberty Christian church with the Rev. Elmer Baker officiating. Burial was in Oak Ridge cemetery.

Mrs. Smith died March 24 at Mercy hospital, Iowa City, after an illness of a month.

Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 12, 1893, in Muscatine County, the daughter of Frank H. and Mary Ann Key Stalkfleet.

Nov. 25, 1913, she was married to George W. Janney. After his death in 1947, she was married to Ray Smith. He died in 1956.

Surviving are 5 daughters, Mrs. Mable Turner, Grabel, Wyo., Mrs. Mildred Guerard and Mrs. Ella Tedrow, both of Fremont, Calif., Mrs. Josephine Smith, West Liberty and Mrs. Maxine Richter, Thomson, Ill.; 7 sons, Frank, Mount Pleasant; Harold, Petaluma, Calif.; Robert, Arlington Heights, Ill.; Donald, Albia; Le Moyne, Newark, Calif.; and Joseph, Ottumwa; 2 stepsons, Loring, New Boston, Ill., and Lester, West Liberty; 7 brothers, Frank, James, Ernest and William, all of Muscatine, Edward, Davenport; Harry, Lawrence, Kan., and Ray, Seattle, Wash.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Margaret Roberts, West Liberty and Mrs. Clara Hinrich, Muscatine; 38 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren.
