MUSCATINE-James Martin Carter, 81 of Muscatine died after a brief illness, Monday May 3, 2021 at the home of his niece.
Visitation will be from 12:00 until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2021, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers-Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to the Friends of Pine Creek Mill. Online memorials: www.wittichfuneralhome.com.
James was born on September 28, 1939, to Harold and Florence (Higgins) Carter in Muscatine, Iowa. He was known as Jimmer by his close friends.
He graduated from Muscatine High School in 1957 and served in the US Navy from 1957-1959. He attended Muscatine Jr College from 1960-1961.
After working for Thatcher Plastics and McKee Button he decided factory life was not for him. He was more of an entrepreneur and from 1969-1979 he owned and operated Carendos, a successful Mexican Restaurant in Muscatine. After that he spent time traveling and visiting his family for the next 20 years.
Jim was the Head of Custodial and Maintenance for over 20 years for Wesley United Methodist Church. He also provided support to the members of Al-Non for years.
He is survived by his siblings, Harold Carter of Missoula, MT, Nancy Reynolds of Medford, OR and Robert Carter (Madelin) of Naples, FL. He had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, including Lisa Starkweather, Shawn Carter, Roger and Dave Buresh, Jan Barnholdt, Rod, Erick, Trent, Mike, Terry, and Tim Carter, Debbie Thompson and Rudy Malnati.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, William Carter; sisters Donna Malnati and LaVada Buresh; and nephews, Robert Malnati and Jason Carter.
