November 17, 1966 - The Tipton Conservative

Mrs. Frank (Genevieve) Broders, 54, was killed in an accident involving a pick-up truck, a gas transport and a small car on the Interstate 80 bridge over the Cedar river about 9:30 p.m. Nov. 14.

Mrs. Broders died instantly when she was thrown from the cab of the pickup truck she was driving. Death was due to a massive skull facture. She also received internal injuries and a broken hip.

Mrs. Broders was returning to her home near the Atalissa interchange of Interstate 80. About midway across the westbound lane of the bridge her truck was struck in the left rear by a Ruan gas transport driven by Cecil Hershberger of Coralville. He was returning to Coralville after having delivered a load of gas to Deerfield, Ill.

Investigating officers say that the impact of the collision tore the box off the rear of the truck and hurled the truck into the railing on the north side of the bridge, approximately 27 feet from the point of impact. It is believed that Mrs. Broders was thrown from the truck at this point and her body was found another 100 feet west down the highway, against the north curb of the bridge.

The pickup truck continued another 100 feet west down the highway, coming to a stop with the front of the truck against the south railing of the bridge, almost across the roadway from Mrs. Broders' body.

The gas transport swerved across the highway and struck the south railing of the bridge, about 10 yards to the west of the Broders' pick-up and then continued down the highway, coming to a stop 316 feet from the first point of impact, blocking the west exit to the highway.

A Volkswagen, driven by Clifton Liter of Glenview, Ill. then struck the body of the pick-up truck which had been thrown down the highway more than 300 feet. There was only slight damage to the car and Liter was not hurt.

The Broders had moved to the Rochester-Atalissa area a little more than a year ago. Before that they lived approximately a mile south of Sunbury. He is a construction worker in the Quad City area. Mrs. Broders had been to Durant to a laundromat and the cab of the pick-up was filled with newly-washed clothing. There were several chicken coops in the box of the pick-up. They had also operated a small poultry business.

Funeral services for Mrs. Broders will be held at 1:30 p.m. today (Nov. 17) at Fairbanks chapel with the Rev. E. B. Meyer of Grace Lutheran church, Muscatine, officiating. Burial will be in the Durant cemetery.

The daughter of Bert and Alice Stromer Riddle, she was born at Muscatine Feb. 3, 1912, and was married May 20, 1937 to Frank Broders at Muscatine. They lived in the Muscatine-Cedar county area.

Surviving are her husband, three sons, Frank Jr., Chester, Ill., Jack, Muscatine and Joel, at home; one daughter, Mrs. George (Gerry) Marolf, Bettendorf; two brothers, Edward and Weldon Riddle, Muscatine, two sisters, Mrs. Ora Smiley of California and Mrs. Ruby Digani, Davenporty; and 8 grandchildren.
