August 11, 1966 - The Tipton Conservative

Flora Hinkhouse, 87, West Liberty, suffered fatal injuries Aug. 8 when the car in which she was riding was struck by a train a mile west of Coralville.

The accident occurred about 6 p.m. Mrs. Hinkhouse died 4 hours later in Mercy hospital in Iowa City.

She was riding in a car driven by her step-daughter, Mrs. Mildred Means, 71, Iowa City. Mrs. Means was thrown from the car. She is in good condition at Mercy hospital with cuts and bruises.

The accident occurred on a private drive near the highway 218-6 junction. The car was hit at the right rear by a Rock Island switch engine pulling 2 cars. The engineer said he saw the car slow down, then pull onto the tracks in front of the train.

A native of Mt. Auburn, the former Flora Abbott was born in 1879. She was married to her third husband, R. W. Hinkhouse in 1926. She had lived in West Liberty for some 40 years.

She is survived by several step-daughters and step-sons and 2 sisters, Lucy See of Waterloo and Mary Stabler of Kewanee, Ill.
