Death of an old Resident.
From the Muscatine Journal we learn that Dr. William C. Battey died at his home in Sweetland township, Muscatine County, this state, on the 29th ult. Dr. Battey was born in Addison county, Vt., in 1824. He studied medicine and began practicing in 1847. In 1855 he came to Iowa, located at Hesper where he lived nineteen years, for fourteen of which he was postmaster. During many of those years he was the only physician north of Decorah and his ride was a very extensive one. Leaving Hesper he went first to Kansas but returned to Iowa and found a home in the country five miles out of Muscatine, where he has since lived. He was twice married. His first wife was Louisa B. Chase, who was the mother of seven children, four of whom survive him. His second wife, a Miss Pace, with three children survives him. The obituary given by the Journal, shows that the deceased was there, as here, a man of high probity and recognized Christian character.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Bloomington Cemetery in Muscatine, IA. It also shows he was born Dec. 3, 1824; however, it shows his date of death as March 28, 1897.
