A rural West Liberty youth and a West Branch man were killed early May 29 in a one-car crash on the blacktop road 1/12 miles north of West Branch.

Dead at the scene was Joseph C. Walker, 18, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Walker of rural West Liberty, who live near Springdale.

Dale Ross Sayles, 22 of West Branch, the driver of the auto, died about 11 a.m. May 29 at University hospital of head injuries.

The accident occurred about 12:30 a.m. just east of the Johnson county line Cedar county.

Authorities said the 2 were thrown from the car as it overturned in a ditch. They were the only occupants of the car.

Walker's body, not found until later, had been thrown over a fence into a field. Sayles was taken to Mercy hospital and later transferred to University hospital.

Double funeral services for Walker and Sayles were May 31 at the Springdale Methodist Church, the Rev. Charles Haigh officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens, Iowa City.

Walker was born July 12, 1946, in Iowa City, the son of Dorothy and James Walker. He was employed by the Trio Body and Fender Co., Muscatine, and was a member of the Methodist church.

Walker is survived by his parents; a sister Trudy Lynn, and 2 brothers, Dennis and Jim, all at home, and by his grandparents, Mrs. Glen Walker of West Liberty and Mr. and Mrs. James Butler of West Branch.
