Lewis A. Whitacre, 85, of West Liberty died at a Muscatine nursing home where he had been a patient about a week.

Funeral services were March 18 at West Liberty, with the Rev. Robert Reynolds, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial was in Oakridge cemetery in West Liberty.

He was born Sept. 24, 1879, in Johnson county, the son of Albert and Harriet Nichols Whitacre. A retired farmer, he had spent almost his entire lifetime in the West Liberty area. Mr. Whitacre raised Jersey cattle.

He was married to Ethel A. Aikens April 26, 1905, in West Liberty. He was a 50-year Knights of Pythias lodge member and attended the Presbyterian church. A coin collector, he had been a member of the American Numismatic association for more than 40 years.

Survivors include his widow; 2 daughters, Mrs. Wayne Irey, West Liberty, and Mrs. Arnold Rabe, Manchester; three sisters, Mrs. J. E. Kimball and Mrs. D. C. Hazlett, both of West Liberty, and Mrs. C. E. Gunderson, Ironwood, Mich.; and 2 granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and one grandson.
