Vernie Carter, Nichols, Dies; Rites on Sunday

Nichols – A lifetime resident of Muscatine, Vernie William Carter, 61, of Nichols, died at 5:40 p.m. Thursday at Veterans hospital, Iowa City, after a lingering illness.

Final rites will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Snider Funeral Home, West Liberty, where it will remain until 11 a.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the Nichols cemetery.

A son of Charles and Ola Chasteen Carter, he was born Sept. 17, 1896, in Muscatine county. His marriage to Mrs. Marie Yedlik took place April 6, 1921. A farmer, he was a member of the Mansell Phillips Post of the American Legion and the Farm Bureau.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Vernon and Burt, both of Nichols; one daughter, Juanita Laughlin, of Davenport; his mother; four brothers, Al and Clen, both of West Liberty, Harold of Conesville, and Ed, of Muscatine; two sisters, Mrs. Erma Buckman, of Iowa City, and Mrs. Vera McMahon, of Muscatine; and six grandchildren.
