Mrs. Cossman, 83, Called in Death

Three Month Illness Proves Fatal to Muscatine Woman at Home of Daughter Katherine Hays Cossman, 83, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Mahurin, 106 West Second street, at 9 a.m. after an illness of three months.

Katherine Hays was the daughter of Valentine and Mary Ann Kramer Hays and was born in Muscatine June 28, 1850. She received her education at St. Mathias school. On Feb 9, 1869, she was married to Peter Cossman of Fox Lake, Ill., at St. Mathias church. She was a charter member of St. Mary’s church and a member of the Rosary society of that church. She made Muscatine her home all her life.

Surviving are one son, Joe B. Cossman, Oconomowoc, Wis.; two daughters, Kate Soltwedel, rural route No. 3, Mary Mahurin at whose home she died; 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; one brother, M. F. Fell, Davenport. Her husband died 37 years ago, and a son, Ben M. Cossman, and a grandson, Robert Custer, also preceded her in death.

The body was taken to the Meyers Funeral home and at 10 a.m.at St. Mary’s church by the Rev. Father N. J. Peiffer. Interment will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.
