Louis Kern was born in Goss Auspaugh, Wertenburg, Germany, August 31, 1838, and died in Dresden, Germany, July 22nd, 1900, aged 61 years, 10 months and 22 days.
Mr. Kern came to America in 1868 and settled at Buffalo, New York. While residing there he was united in marriage to Miss Franzika Miller. To this union was born six children, one daughter and five sons. The daughter and one son preceded their father to the spirit world. The four sons living are Frank L., married and living at Riverside; August L. married and living near Nichols; Wilhelm L. and Henry L. are at home. These together with the mother, two brothers and two sisters are left to mourn their loss.
After leaving Buffalo, New York, Mr. and Mrs. Kern moved to Davenport, Ia., residing there about four years. From Davenport they moved to West Liberty and lived there about 18 months. In 1871 they moved to Nichols, where they have since resided.
On the 23 day of June he started to visit at his old home in Germany, arriving there July 12th. While visiting with friends at Dresden, and before he had arrived at the home of his relatives, he was taken quite sick with appendicitis, and died in the hospital at Dresden, on July 22nd.
According to his own request his body was cremated and the ashes sent back home, arriving last Saturday.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday October 16, 1900, by Rev. W. H. Keyser, and the ashes were deposited in the Nichols cemetery.
