D.C. Ward, Retired Business Man, Dies
Muscatine Resident, 52, Succumbs to Illness.
D.C. Ward, retired Muscatine business man, died at Hershey hospital at 8:30 p.m. Thursday after an illness with a complication of ailments. Mr. Ward was 52 years old at the time of his death and resided at 712 Sycamore street.
He was born on a farm near Sidney, O., July 5, 1870. At the age of 19 he began his career as a dry goods merchant at Sidney and later went to Minneapolis, Minn., and then to Jamestown, N.D.
In 1909 he came to Davenport where he remained as a partner of M.L. Parker at the Davenport store until the fall of 1913 when he took charge of the Batterson store here. On March 27, 1929, the Batterson store was sold to the Ely Walker company of St. Louis, and Mr. Ward retired from active business.
He married Miss Laura Baumann of Rock Island in 1911. He was a member of Iowa lodge, A.F. and A.M., Washington chapter, R.A.M., Webb council, No. 18, R. and S.M., DeMolay commander No. 1, Knights Templar here and of Kaaba temple of the Mystic Shrine Davenport.
Surviving are the widow and one daughter, Lorraine, at home; one sister, Belle Baker, Lima, O., and a brother, John Ward, Sidney, O.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals by the Rev. Rolfe, Rock Island. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. The body will remain at the Fairbanks chapel until services.
