Ernest C. Kerr, 87, a business man for more than 60 years and a one-time mayor of West Liberty, died Jan. 12. He had been in failing health in recent months.
Mr. Kerr is believed to have been the last surviving school classmate of former President Herbert Hoover at West Branch. Born in Damascus, Ohio, May 31, 1873, he attended West Branch schools and was in business in West Branch before moving to West Liberty in 1899.
He was a partner in Ditmars-Kerr and Co., lumber and implement dealers. Mr. Kerr was active in business until last fall.
He was a former chairman of the board of trustees of the Methodist church, a former president of the Iowa Implement dealers association, a 50-year member of the Masonic lodge and a member of the Good Roads committee.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Mrs. Lolita Brooke and Mrs. Leota Heath, both of West Liberty, 3 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and a brother, Morris M. Kerr, Denver, Colo.
Mrs. Kerr died July 20, 1957.
Funeral services were Jan. 14 at the Methodist church with the Rev. Dale Williams, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Oakridge cemetery.
