MRS. T. B. HOLCOMB SUCCUMBS AFTER YEARS OF ILLNESS.
In Unconscious Condition for Past Month – All Relatives Present at Bedside on Death.
Lying in an unconscious condition for the greater part of the last four weeks, during which were experienced lucid periods of only short duration, Mrs. T. B. Holcomb, 65 years old, wife of one of Muscatine’s prominent citizens, succumbed this morning at 5 o’clock at her residence, 900 Maple Grove road. Death had been anticipated at almost any hour in the last month, stimulants alone preserving the well-known woman’s life until this morning, the end proving a relief. Organic heart trouble with subsequent developments of other ills, caused her demise. She had been an invalid for the last nine years, gradually failing in health but never at any time critically ill until the latter part of the present month, when her life was despaired of by relatives. She rallied at brief intervals sufficiently to recognize all relatives, each member of her family being in attendance upon her during her final sickness.
Mrs. Holcomb endeared herself to hundreds through her active participation in church work. Her charities were numerous and her philanthropic work brought cheer to many an otherwise desolate home. She confined the greater part of her charitable work to the Episcopal church of which she was one of the most prominent workers until her health broke down. While a resident in the east, the decedent was one of the prime factors in the erection of the Christ church at Greenville, Ohio. Through her efforts, together with several other wealthy members of that congregation, funds were secured which eventually resulted in the building of the beautiful edifice.
She was prominent in local social circles until the state of her health necessitated her abandoning many pleasures. Mrs. Holcomb did much entertaining and was always sought after, her congenial, company being regarded as an asset by Muscatine hostesses.
The deceased was a graduate of the local schools, coming to this city in 1855 at the age of eight years. She was born at Milton, Wayne county, Ind., in 1847. Coming to this city as a child she resided here with her parents until 1872, when they removed to Greenville, Ohio, where she became the bride of T. B. Holcomb, a life-long resident of Muscatine, in 1884. Immediately following the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Holcomb removed to this city, having been continuous residents.
Mrs. Holcomb is survived by her husband; three children, Miss Wilma Holcomb, Hugh B. Holcomb and Frank G. Holcomb, all of Muscatine; a sister, Mrs. C. E. Stewart, of Iowa City, and a brother, T. A. Wallace, of Greenville, O.
The funeral will be conducted from the residence Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Burial will take place at Greenwood cemetery. The Rev. Webster Hakes, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal church, will have charge of the obsequies.
