Circus Rider Killed Before a Large Crowd.
Before a crowd of 5,000 spectators at Muscatine, Captain Demetri, a Cossack rider with Campbell Bros.’ circus, had his brains knocked out and one limb torn completely from his body.
He was riding a fiery steed with one foot in the stirrup and hanging head downward. When nearing a turn in the arena his horse swerved, causing the rider’s head to strike a tent pole, mashing his head to a jelly and causing blood to spatter on the onlookers in the reserved seat section. His leg became entangled in a guy rope and was torn out at the groin. The performance was finished.
