Paralysis Fatal to William Leroy Roach - William Leroy Roach II, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Roach, 2200 Mulberry avenue, died at the University hospital at Iowa City at 7:30 a.m. Sunday after a several days illness with infantile paralysis. He was taken to the hospital Friday.
William, who had completed his junior year at Muscatine high school in June, was an outstanding student. He was active in track, football and in various organizations in the school, winning his major letter in track last spring, where he specialized in the high hurdles. He was also a member of the Hi-Y organization, the Curia Regia club, of the debate squad, and served on the staff of the Auroran, high school publication. William was also a member of the high school student council. Previous to enrolling at Muscatine high school he attended St. Mathias high school and received his grade school education in the parochial school.
William was a devout member of the St. Mathias church.
Born in Jacksonville, Fla., March 18, 1921, he came to Muscatine with his parents when slightly more than a year old and had resided here since.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Roach; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Schneider of Iowa City and Mrs. W. L. Roach of Madison, Wis., and the following uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Roach, of Muscatine, Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Roach of Highland Park, Ill., John A. Schneider and Miss Florence M. Schneider, both of Iowa City.
The body, placed in a sealed metal casket, will be taken from the Fairbanks Home for Funerals to the residence at 2200 Mulberry avenue late this afternoon, to remain there until rites are held. The funeral service will be at St. Mathias church at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. W. L. Hannon, pastor, in charge. Burial will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.
The death of William Leroy Roach was the second to occur in a week’s time from infantile paralysis. Burton Lukenbach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle L. Lukenbach, Hershey avenue, succumbed the week previous.
