18 December 1958 - The Tipton Conservative

Graveside services were held Tuesday in Oakdale cemetery at Wilton Junction for Almond F. Conant, 84. Mr. Conant, a former resident of Wilton Junction, died Saturday afternoon in a hospital at Corydon.

The son of Freeman C. and Alice Stryker Conant, he was born in Wilton Junction Aug. 15, 1874.

His parents' apartment where he was born was on the second floor of a frame building situated where Arthur Hucke's store is now. Five days later, this building and a number of other nearby structures were burned in the disastrous fire of Aug. 20, 1874.

Mr. Conant was graduated from the commercial department of the Wilton German-English college in 1896, when that department was in charge of Prof. J. B. Harris. Mr. Conant also received a certificate for 10 years of service with the hose company of the Wilton volunteer fire department.

For some years he was in the hardware business in Wilton Junction with his father. He continued in this business after his father's death, and later sold it to Richard C. Cooling. He lived in Battle Creek for about 25 years where he farmed and later was connected with several business firms. He retired to an acreage at New Boston in 1931, and in 1938, he moved to Corydon, where he spent the rest of his life.

Mr. Conant was never married. His parents were among the old-time residents of Wilton Junction, his father coming to Wilton Junction in 1867, following service in the Civil war. His mother's father, the Rev. A. W. Stryker, was pastor of the Wilton Methodist church in the early 1860's.

Surviving are a brother, the Rev. P. M. Conant, and a nephew, Preston S. Conant, both of Muscatine.
