Edward Smith.

Edward smith was born on the 1st of July, 1870 in Pike Twp., Muscatine county, Iowa, and died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Nugent, Nichols, May 29, 1907, being at the time of his death 36 years, 10 months and 29 days. He was married 23rd of February, 1898 to Miss Hattie Hillyer of Nichols, who died 5th of October, 1905.
He leaves to mourn his loss three children, Albert, Chancey and Eddie; three brothers, Thomas of Minnesota, James of Nichols, and Charles of Nichols; also two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Nugent, and Mrs. J. W. Lewis, both of Nichols, besides numerous relatives and friends who mourn his early demise. He was a true friend, a kind and indulgent father, and an affectionate husband. When his wife died the lamp of his life seemed to have gone out. He staggered under the blow, which undoubtedly hastened his death. He was conscious to the last, and was prepared to meet his God. His sister, Mrs. Nugent, in whose home he spent his last days and hours, was more like a mother that a sister to him. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of many which can never be filled.
The funeral services were held in the M. E. church, Nichols, Rev. W. J. Scott, pastor of the church, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in Nichols cemetery and followed by a large procession.
