D. Reed, 18, Dies As Motorcycle Runs Into Auto

Donald Reed, aged 18 years, whose home was on rural route No. 3, Muscatine, met instant death when the motorcycle he was riding crashed head-on into a car driven by Eldo Krebs, of Durant, on county road B, two miles south of Durant, at 9:15 p.m. Thursday.
Sheriff Fred Nesper, Dr. C. P. Phillips, county coroner and members of the state highway patrol, called to investigate the accident, termed the death accidental and no inquest was held.
The Reed youth was driving his motorcycle north on the county road when it crashed into the Krebs car. Force of the impact hurled Reed into the windshield of the car. He suffered a basal skull fracture and multiple fractures to his body. Death was instantaneous.
Mr. Krebs, who had his wife and six children with him in the car, suffered a leg injury and his 6-year-old daughter, Kathleen, suffered a scalp injury.
The motorcycle was demolished and the front of the Krebs car badly damaged.
Donald Reed, who attended Muscatine high school last year had enlisted in the merchant marine and was awaiting a call for service.
The son of Elmer E. and Maude Morehead Reed, who reside on a farm one and one-half miles southwest of New Era, he was born at Keosauqua, Ia., on Aug. 21, 1927, and resided in Rock Island before coming to Muscatine county four years ago.
He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Merlyn Reed with the United Stated army in Germany, Wayne Reed with the United States marine corps in Hawaii and Vaughn Reed of New Era; two sisters, Mrs. Davis Buchele of Fairport and Mrs. William Martin of Rock Island; and his grandfather, Theodore Morehead, of Rock Island.
The body is at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home and will remain there for services at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. August Aden of the Ziegler Memorial church at New Era will be in charge and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
