Longtime Resident of Pike Township, Muscatine County, Dies.

Columbus Junction – Philander Newton, 87, one of the last civil War veterans in this community, died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Webster Newton this morning after an extended illness.
Mr. Newton was born in Knightstown, Ind., March 15, 1847, moving to Muscatine county at the age of four years. He lived on a farm in Pike township, Muscatine county, until seven years ago when he came here.
He enlisted in the 11th Iowa infantry and served in the Civil war.
Surviving are two brothers, Thompson Newton of Nichols and Jesse newton of Atkinson, Neb., seven nephews and three nieces, including Phillip and Jess Newton of Columbus Juntion, Walter of Muscatine, Clarence, Adrian and Lysle Newton of Nichols and Mrs. Mabel Peppin of Nichols.
Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Nichols Methodist church. Burial will be in the Watkins cemetery near Nichols.
