Many From Abroad Present to Pay Last Respects to the Departed –
Obituary of Dr. Nolan.
-----

Nichols, Ia., April 14.—(Special.)—The funeral of Dr. J. Nolan, who passed away at his home here Sunday evening, was held yesterday from St. Mary's Catholic church, when a solemn requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Timothy Nolan, of North Dakota, a cousin of the doctor, with Father Ward, of Iowa City, as deacon, and Father Curtain of Brooklyn, as sub-deacon and Father Walsh, of Washington, as master of ceremonies.
The funeral was preached by Rev. Father McArder, of Solon. Other clergymen present were: Very Rev. Monsignore J. P. Ryan, of Davenport; Rev. F. J. Leonard, of Muscatine; Rev. Henry Knebel, of Tipton; Rev. Nugent, of Kinross; Rev. Bulger, of Ottumwa; Rev. M. F. Notan, of Missouri Valley, and several others.
The attendance at the funeral was a striking tribute to the esteem in which the deceased physician was held by his fellow citizens and by many in other cities. More than fifty teams were in the cortege that proceeded to the Catholic cemetery west of Nichols, where the interment was made.
Many members of the Knights of Columbus, of which Dr. Nolan was a prominent and active member, attended the services members from Muscatine, Iowa City, Letts, Ardon, and other places being present. Dr. Nolan was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, which order was largely represented at the funeral.

Obituary.

Dr. John J. Nolan was born in Kerry county, Ireland, on Feb. 15, 1869, and departed this life at his home at Nichols, Ia., April 10, 1910, having attained the age of 41 years, 1 month and 25 days.
Dr. Nolan received his early education in Ireland, graduating at an early age from St. Michels college at Listowe. Having completed the classical course, soon after this he immigrated to America, arriving at Nichols, Ia., in 1892. From here he went to Iowa City and entered the university. After spending two years there he went to St. Louis university at St. Louis, Mo., where he graduated in medicine in 1895, and directly afterward located in Nichols, were his cheerful, hopeful disposition, linked with his skill in his chosen calling, soon won for him a steadily increasing practice which often tried his time and strength to the utmost.
In September of 1899 he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Ryan, of Nichols, and to this union were born three children – Robert, aged 10, Marie, aged 6, and Edward, aged 3 – all of whom, with their sorrowing mother, are left to mourn the departure of a loving husband and father, while in far-away Ireland, and aged mother and three sisters and two brothers, with one brother in this country, Rev. M. F. Nolan, of Missouri City, Ia., are left to mourn a son and father(note: should by brother). One brother, Rev. Robert Nolan, preceded him in death at Nichols, Ia., in 1901.
In 1903, Dr. Nolan, accompanied by his wife and a brother, made a trip to Ireland and visited boyhood scenes, little thinking this would be the last time he would look upon the face of the dear ones there.
