William Calvin Kipe was born in Pleasant Valley, Scott county, Iowa, on March 10, 1855, the eldest of a family of four, being at the time of his death 57 years, 2 days old. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania.
By nature, he was possessed of a genial, kind hearted disposition, ever willing even at sacrifice to himself to lend a helping hand to others.
For more than a year he was a constant sufferer from the disease which claimed him March 12, 1912. On September 29, 1876, he was united in marriage to Jennie Gardner, at Eldridge, Ia. To this union four children were born, Alice, wife of Jas. Koch, of Miles, Iowa; Samuel John, who preceded his father to his Heavenly home in July 1903; Emma, wife of John Meek, resident of Nichols, Iowa, and Elsie, wife of Ed. Hall of Davenport.
In his youth he united with the Presbyterian church at Summit, Iowa.
Beside the immediate family he leaves an aged mother at Davenport and three brothers in Montana and South Dakota, besides numerous other relatives who were unable to be present.
The funeral services were held March 14, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Meek, who with her husband had recently moved onto a farm near Nichols, Ia.
The service was conducted by Rev. C. E. Fitzsimmons, of Nichols. Interment was in the Swickard cemetery.
