Nichols, Iowa – Services for Ethel Alberta Green, 79, of Nichols, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 1998 at Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. Burial will be in Nichols Cemetery.
Visitation is 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 1998 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Green died Monday, April 20, 1998, in Muscatine at the home of her son, Gerald Green.
She was retired from the Nichols School where she had worked with the school lunch program. She belonged to the Women of the Moose for many years. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards, traveling and her family, especially family reunions.
Ethel Hillyer was born July 16, 1918, in Canaan, Connecticut, the daughter of John A. & Mary Howe Hillyer. Ethel came to live in Nichols, Iowa in 1925, with her family. She graduated from Nichols High School in 1937.
She married Durward “Red” Green on May 18, 1942, in Kahoka, Missouri. Red and Ethel had four children. They lived in Peru, Illinois, until 1947 when they moved with their young sons, to Anchorage, Alaska. Both daughters were born in Anchorage. In 1958, Ethel & her three children moved to Nichols, Iowa, after Red passed away.
Survivors include sons, Larry (Cynnie) Green, Lone Tree; Gerald (Sharon) Green, Muscatine; daughter, Phyllis (Tom) Hazen, Nichols; one brother, John A. Hillyer, Jr., Middletown; sisters Genevieve Oostendorp Still, Conesville; Jeanette Carlile, Muscatine; Grace Krolak, Peru, IL.; Shirley Hillyer, Nichols; 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 3 step great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, June Marie Green, a brother, Almon “Knute” Hillyer, and step mother, Gladys Hillyer.
