WAS WELL KNOWN AT WEST LIBERTY

Brilliant Military Career Is Brought to Close When He Meets Death in Line of Duty – Was With Pershing in Mexico.

Lieutenant Colonel Clark Elliott, of West Liberty, Iowa, was killed by machine gun fire while making observations on the American front near Soissons according to associated Press dispatches of last evening. He was engaged in an inspection of the front line when he received the fatal injury.
While in the U. S. army for a number of years Lieutenant Colonel Elliott was well known in this county. Last summer he made a visit at West Liberty and at other points in the vicinity. He was born and reared near West Liberty and was well known to a large number in that section of the country. His father Edward Clark (should be Elliott) died at the Hershey Hospital in this city quite recently. He leaves a wife and one child who formerly resided at West Liberty. He also leaves a brother, Judge Charles B. Elliott of Minnesota who was for a time judge of the Supreme Court of Minnesota and later a judge in the Philippine Islands.
His Army Career.
Lieut. Col. Elliott rose from the ranks to command of troops. He first enlisted in the regular cavalry in 1894, when he was 22 years old, serving as private, corporal, and sergeant in the Third cavalry.
He was commissioned in July, 1898, as second lieutenant of the Fifteenth Minnesota infantry. At the close of the Spanish war he was commissioned second lieutenant in the Tenth United States infantry. Col. Elliott served in Mexico with Pershing and was sent to France with one of the first regular regiments.
