Fire chief and councilman at Nichols dies suddenly

NICHOLS — Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Nichols Christian church for Robert H. Hillyer, 49, a member of the Nichols town council and chief of the fire department.
Mr. Hillyer died Tuesday afternoon of a heart attack while working south of West Liberty. The body is at the Snider Funeral Home, West Liberty, where visitation will begin Thursday. The Rev. William Keller will officiate at funeral services. Burial will be in the Nichols cemetery.
A son of James H. and Edna L. Metcalf Hillyer, he was born May I6, 1922, at Nichols. He married Geraldine Green on Dec. 31, 1942, Oceanside, Calif. Mr.. Hillyer was a World War II veteran, serving in the Marines. He was manager of the Hawkeye Lumber Co., Nichols and a member of the Nichols Christian church, a long-time member of the Nichols fire department and a member of Mansell L. Phillips Post No. 509 of the American Legion, West Liberty.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, James and Roy, both of Nichols; two daughters, Kathy and Linda, both of Nichols; three brothers, Clarence and Lester, both of Nichols, and Archie, Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Bernice Longstreth, Nichols; and two grandchildren.

NICHOLS - Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today for Robert H. Hillyer, 49, at the Nichols Christian church. Rev. William Keller officiated. The organist was Mrs. Edna Kirchner. Burial was in the Nichols cemetery.
Pallbearers were Donald Carter, Victor Mills, Lawrence Harder, Richard Fridley, Harley Kirkpatrick and Robert Kaalberg. Services were under the directions of the Snider Funeral Home.
Mr. Hillyer died Tuesday afternoon while working south of West Liberty.
