CONE PIONEER MERCHANT DIES
IRA OWEN AGE 87 YEARS DIED ON SUNDAY.
Death Came Suddenly at Early Hour In Day – Enjoyed Wide Acquaintance in Orono Township
Conesville, Ia., march 5. – Orono township lost its oldest resident and Conesville a pioneer merchant when Ira Owen passed away at his home here yesterday morning. His death was due to ills attendant upon old age. Although he retired in his usual health on Saturday evening he awakened during the night and complained of pains about his chest. Later he sank into a state of coma and passed away quietly at 7:30 o’clock.
The son of Elijah and Hannah Owen, he was born in Lake County, Ohio, on August 29th, 1829, attaining the age of 87 years. At the age of seven years he removed to Steuben County, Ohio, with his parents.
He was united in marriage to Lucinda Heath on August 12, 1852. To this union two children were born, one dying in infancy while Alden passed away at Greeley, Col., September 24, 1880. His wife died on July 31, 1860. Two years later he was again united in marriage to Katherine Heath, a sister of his first wife. Herbery Owen and Mrs. Mertha D. McCormick, both of this place survive this marriage.
In September 1874, Mr. Owen removed to this place from Indiana. He engaged in business here and was a prominent merchant at this place until several years ago when failing health promoted his retirement. Aside from the two children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive.
The funeral services were held today at the Reformed church. Rev. Harvey Butler, of Nichols, being in charge. Interment was made in the Cone cemetery. Those acting as pall bearers were John Hankins, John Dyche, Alex McCullough, Leo Brown, P. J. Wehr and John Bowlby.The Muscatine Journal
