PIONEER RESIDENT DIES SUDDENLY

John Ruess, of West Liberty, succumbs.

Had Lived on His Farm for the Past Forty Years Continuously - Was Born in Germany in 1825.

WEST LIBERTY, IOWA - December 18, 1908 (Special) - John William Ruess, 83, a resident of this vicinity for over half a century, passed away suddenly at his home at South Prairie last evening at 7:30 o’clock.

He had been feeling as well as usual during the day. Retiring soon after supper, he was talking with members of his family, when the death agony seized him. Heart failure is given as the cause of his death.

Mr. Ruess was born at Wurthemburg, Germany, on November 16, 1825. He came to this country, to Minnesota, when 28 years of age. In 1853 he moved to West Liberty and since that time has lived in or around this place. For the past forty years he has lived on his farm at South Prairie.

He was married to Miss Margaretta Burger at Iowa City in 1859. He is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters. These latter are Henry and Frank, of South Prairie, and William, at home, and Miss Kate Ruess, Mrs. Anna Romaine, and Mrs. Elizabeth Hoffelder, of Iowa City, and Miss Frances Ruess, at home. Earlier this year a daughter, Rosalia Bryan, preceded him in death.

The funeral will beheld at 11:30 o’clock tomorrow, December 19, 1908.

Mr. Ruess was well-known in this part of the county and has hosts of friends.
