REQUIEM MASS FOR HENRY RUESS

WEST LIBERTY, IOWA - Henry R. Ruess, the oldest of eight children was born on South Prairie, near West Liberty, July 31, 1860 to John and Margaret Burger Ruess and died at his home in West Liberty on January 29, 1936, at the age of 75 years, 5 months, and 28 days.

He attended the public schools and spent his early life on the farm. On January 1, 1890, he was united in marriage with Wilhelmina "Minnie" Brugman of Nichols. To this union were born four children: Albert J, Antoinette E. (Wolters), Louis F., and Agnes A. There also are fourteen grandchildren, four sisters, Anna Romaine, Kate Ruess, Frances Ruess, and Elizabeth Hoffelder, and one brother, Will, surviving. Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, Frank, and one sister, Rosalia Bryan.

In 1917 he moved to West Liberty leaving the two sons to carry on the farm. He had been in failing health for 1 ½ years and confined to his home since last November.

He has always been a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, West Liberty from which funeral services were held Saturday morning.

Requiem High Mass was sung by Rev. J. J. Welsh, assisted by St. Mary’s choir of Nichols. Leo Van Aken sang two selections and Lenora Milder accompanied at the organ during the services.

Pallbearers were Ed Sullivan, Frank Moylan, Will Derkson, Fred Wolf, Charles Burkart, and George Schafer.

Burial was made in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in West Liberty.

Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the services were: Miss Kate Ruess, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hoffelder and son, Raymond, Mrs. Sarah Ruess, and three daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Geraldine, Miss Hazel Romaine, Edward and Charles Bryan, and Mrs. Tom Kelley, all of Iowa City; Mrs. Lillian McCoy of Omaha, NE; John Brugman of Chicago, IL; Mrs. Henry Steyaert and daughter Clara of Davenport, IA; William Droll and son, Robert, Miss Matilda Brugman of Hills, IA; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Budelier of Wilton Junction, IA; and Mrs. Roy Hyland of Cedar Rapids, IA.
