Rodney Smith, Sr.

West Liberty, Iowa – Rodney E. Smith Sr., 70, West Liberty, died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Services were 10 a.m. today at the Cedar Valley United Methodist Church near West Liberty. The Rev. Betsey Neipert officiated. Burial was at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty.

Visitation was Thursday, Dec. 31, 2003, at the Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 5, 1933, in West Liberty, the son of Earl and Della Kramer Smith. He married Betty Martin June 7, 1953. She preceded him in death in 1977. He later married Christine Collins Nov. 25, 1977, in Iowa City.

He graduated from West Liberty High School in 1951.

He had worked as a fireman with the Rock Island Railroad; operated the Standard Oil Station in West Liberty from 1965-1969; and later owned and operated Rodney’s Sales and Service. Most recently he worked as bus superintendent for the West Liberty School System, retiring in 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Christine of West Liberty; two daughters, Sharon Shetler and husband Steve of Atalissa and Jennifer Herring and husband Rob of Mechanicsville; a son, Rodney Smith, Jr. and wife Johanna of Mount Vernon; a sister Ethel Burnett of West Liberty; four brothers, Frank Smith, Robert smith, Wayne Smith and Kenney Smith, all of West Liberty; five grandchildren, Christopher, LeeAnn, Devinn, Leah and Briley; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Dylan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; and a sister, Betty Weinard.
