Brief Illness Proves Fatal to Haifleigh

Sweetland - S. D. Haifleigh, 79, a resident of Sweetland township for 67 years, died at his home at 10:30 a.m. Sunday after a brief illness. Although in failing health for several years he was not seriously ill until Friday night after a family gathering held in honor of his 79th birthday.
Mr. Haifleigh was born Oct. 20, 1854 in Carroll county, Maryland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Haifleigh. He came to Iowa with his parents when 12, settling in Sweetland township, where he has lived continuously since.
He married Miss Ella Miller, Feb. 3, 1881. Mr and Mrs. Haifleigh celebrated thier golden wedding at the Sweetland church in February, 1881 jointly with Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Wood also of the Sweetland community.
He was a member of the Sweetland Methodist Episcopal church in which he had been active for many years. He served as chairman of the board of stewards and trustees for approximately 40 years and several years as superintendent of the Sunday school.
Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Charles Shepard of Sweetland township; two brothers, J.C. Haifleigh of Newton and C.A Haifleigh of Muscatine; and four grandchildren, Vernon Shepard of Wilton township, Mrs. Carl Bancks of Montpelier, James and Helen Shepard of Sweetland township.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Sweetland Methodist Episcopal church at 2 p.m. Tuesday after brief services at the home at 1:30 o'clock. Burial will be at the Harker cemetery in Sweetland township.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. J.A. Worrell of the Sweetland church, assisted by the Rev. J.J. Pritchard of Wayland, former Sweeltand pastor.
The body was returned to the home from the Hoffman mortuary Sunday afternoon.
