WEST LIBERTY, Iowa - Harold William Dettwiler Sr., 68, of West Liberty, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at his home following an extended illness.

Services will be at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Liberty. The Rev. Terry Mahnke will officiate. Pat Tharp will be the organist. Pallbearers will be John Dettwiler, Harold Dettwiler Jr., Larry Meyer, Brian Courtois, Kyle Meyer, and Cody Dettwiler.

Visitation will be at the Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Memorials may be made to the Hospice Unit in Iowa City.

He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Oxford, the son of Walter and Martha Zimmerman Dettwiler. He married Frances Melton on Dec. 11, 1954, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Liberty.

He lived in West Liberty for over 60 years. He was employed at R. J. Dick in Muscatine and raised feeder pigs on the side for many years, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Dettwiler of West Liberty; two sons, Harold W. ''Buzz'' Dettwiler and his wife, Jody, of Conesville and John Dettwiler and his wife, Renee, of Conroe, Texas; two daughters, Susan Meyer and her husband, Larry, of Shawnee Mission, Kan. and Kathy Courtois and her husband, Brian, of North Liberty; a brother, Walter Dettwiler of Longmont, Colo.; a sister, Martha White and her husband, Howard of Longmont, Colo; 10 grandchildren, Cody, Hannah, Sam, Justin, Kyle, Kayla, Allison, Dana, Nathan, Jacob; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, Walter and Martha Dettwiler; a brother, Richard Dettwiler; two sisters, Clara Kiley and Esther Dettwiler; and a granddaughter, Jacklyn.
