Marie Esther Christian, 85, of Tipton, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Crestview Nursing Home and Rehab Center, in West Branch.

Services will be at the Fry Funeral Home in Tipton. The Revs. Norman Anderson and Steve Schmaljohn. Burial will be at Tipton Masonic Cemetery in Tipton.

She was born on Sept. 23, 1914, in Cedar County, the daughter of David Vin Kensinger and Minnie Margaret Jensen. She married Merle Burdette Christian on June 1, 1936, in Nashua. She taught school at Snaggy Ridge, Sunbury, Hebron, Springfield No. 7, retiring in 1980 in Mecha. She graduated from Tipton High School and attended Muscatine Junior College and the University of Iowa. She was a member of Rochester United Methodist Church. She was a member of Rochester Farm Bureau, Tipton Moose Lodge, B.P.W., Iowa State Teachers Association, N.E.A., and U.M.W.

Survivors include two sons, Marlin Christian, and his wife, Mary and William Christian, all of Tipton; grandchildren, Michael, Mark, Cody, and Kelly; a great-grandchild, Caleb; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Minnie Kensinger; her husband, Merle Burdette Christian in Aug. 1976; a son, Merlin Lee, infant twin son on March 4, 1945; and two brothers, Fred and Harold Kensinger.
