JOY, Ill.
Leonard E. Castle, 84, of Joy, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at home after an extended illness of cancer.

Funeral services were at the Joy United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rachel Stockle, of the Westmer Large Parish and Rev. John Mattingly, of the First Baptist Church of Joy officiated. Pallbearers were his son, Warren Castle, Roger Kiddoo, Bill Retherford, Kevin Coulter, Gary Sedam and John Retherford. Burial will be at the Peniel Cemetery in Joy. The Trimble Funeral Home in Aledo was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Joy United Methodist Church.

He was born on May 25, 1915, in Duncan Township, Mercer County, Ill., the son of Fred S. and Velma Graham Castle. He married Hazel Mueller on July 21, 1945, in Edgington, Ill. She died Sept. 28, 1959. He married Ruth Noble Olson on January 8, 1961, in Winfield. She died Jan. 10, 1990. They farmed north of Joy for 13 years before moving to Joy in 1974.

He was educated at the Joy High School and was a World War II Veteran, serving from 1941-1945.

He was a member of the Joy United Methodist Church where he had served as church trustee. He was also a member of the Mercer County Farm Bureau, the Monmouth Legion Post and was on the Board of the Mercer County Senior Citizen Center. He was Millersburg Township Road Commissioner from 1974 to 1981. After retiring to Joy, he continued to plow snow and mow yards for family and neighbors in Joy. He loved fishing, gardening and especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He was a avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include his son, Warren Castle of Joy; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Murrel Sloan of Matherville; step-daughters, Marilyn and Bill Hessman of Joy and Diana Nelson of Morriston, Fla.; step-son, David and Barbara Olson of Wheaton, Ill.; 13 Grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his twin brother, Lynn Castle and his wife, Ruby of Joy and a sister, Gertrude Bethel and her husband, George, of Aledo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Bonnie, at birth, both of his wives, six brothers, and a daughter-in-law, Sandra Castle.
