EVANSDALE, Iowa - Mary Altekruse, 80, of Evansdale, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Services: Parrott and Wood Funeral Home, Waterloo.
Burial will be at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens in Cedar Falls.

Mrs. Altekruse was born Jan. 28, 1927, in Conesville, the daughter of George and Letha Bergen Rada. She received her education in Muscatine, where she graduated from high school.

She then worked as a secretary at Oscar Myer Company in Davenport and was the personal secretary for Oscar Myer Jr.

She married Edwin Altekruse on Dec. 16, 1951, in Muscatine.

They made their home on a farm near Muscatine before moving to Cedar Falls, where they owned and operated the Town and Country Motel.

After they sold the motel they operated the T and K Health Food Store in Waterloo until their retirement.

In later years, they moved to make their home in Evansdale and most recently she was a patient at the Covenant Medical Center .

She was a past member of the Beta Sigma Phi Society.

She is survived by her husband; his children, Nancy Martin of Waterloo and Tad (Vernita) Altekruse of Dallas; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Larry Rada of Fuquay Varina, N.C., and Leonard Rada of Muscatine; and a sister, Delores McKenzie of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert, Lyle and Walter; and a sister, Ruth Coulter.
