WEST BRANCH, Iowa - Richard "Dick" Isaac Achenbach, 65, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at University Hospitals in Iowa City following a long illness.

Services will be at the United Methodist Church in West Branch.

Memorials can be directed to the Richard Achenbach memorial. The Barker funeral Home in West Branch is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Achenbach was born May 6, 1935, near Morse and Cedar Bluff, the son of Isaac and Ethel Sproston Achenbach. He married Gloria Pennington on Feb. 1, 1956, in Cedar Rapids.

The couple lived in and near Iowa City, West Liberty, West Branch and Cedar Bluff. He was employed at the Iowa Department of Transportation for 37 years before retiring in 1990. He also worked part-time operating heavy equipment for Frank J. Meyer for several years.

He spent much of his life doing things for other people. He and his wife were members of the Downey Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Pennington Achenbach of Cedar Bluff; his children, Cindy Mays and her husband, Paul, from Donnellson, Tracey Achenbach and her husband, Bernie Shrader from Waterloo; Jeffrey Achenbach and his wife, Linda, from Omaha, Nebraska, and Rick Achenbach and his wife, Aline, from Tipton; his grandchildren, Christopher Noring, Pablo Mays, Ian Mays, Erin Achenbach, Betsy Achenbach, Robert Achenbach, Isaac Achenbach, and Nathaniel Achenbach; his sisters, Ada Simmons of West Branch, Esther ''Jean'' Gilliatt of Cedar Rapids and Norma Long and her husband, Mervyn, of Vinton; sisters, Beverly Lynch and her husband, Willard and Kay Erenberger and her husband, Vernon, all of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Andrew and George Achenbach; his sister, Naomi Dvorsky; and his wife's parents, Homer and Madeline Pennington.
