JOHN J. COTTRELL

John J. Cottrell, 41, a former member of the Muscatine police department, took his own life with a .410 shotgun late Sunday night.

Mr. Cottrell was pronounced dead on arrival at midnight at Musctine General hospital.

County Medical Examiner Dr. V.W. Swayze said Mr. Cottrell died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds at his home at 918 Orange Street.

Mr. Cottrell, a life resident of Muscatine, had been employed as a used car salesman and at other jobs.

He was born Dec. 1, 1925, in Muscatine, the son of Calvin C. and Mayme Moore Cottrell.

He was married Jan. 5, 1961, at Juarez, Mexico, to Judith Lea Keller.

He was a member of Musserville Methodist church, the Elks club and the American Legion.

He is survived by the widow, Judith Cottrell; two sons now serving in the armed forces, two daughters, Theresa Mae Cottrell and Andrea Lea Cottrell, both at home; one brother, Clifford C. Cottrell of Muscatine; and three sisters, Mrs. Thorvald (Mary) Thomsen of Tipton, Mrs. Alfred (Loretta) Hansen of Wilton, and Mrs. Sidney (Cheryl) Broud of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and two brothers.

The body is now at the Geroge M. Wittich funeral home, where services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday with Rev. T. Ray Crews officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood cemetery.

A memorial mass for Mr. Cottrell will be said at 8 am Saturday at St. Mathias church.
