E.C. Hesser and family attended the funeral of Mr. Hesser's father, J.E. Hesser who died at Nichols on Monday (May 1, 1922).

He was born in Ohio, June 30, 1843. He served in the army during the Civil War, taking part in several important battles, among them Shiloh, Chicamauga, and Gettysburg. He received several wounds in two battles and spent three months in LIbby prison, during that time his arm being severly affected by gangrene. He was the last surviving veteran in Pike township of the Battle of Shiloh.

For nearly forty years he resided in the Nichols community, holding many public positions, among them being postmaster, marshal, and secretary of the school board for long terms of years.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, two sons, Hayes of Portland, Oregon, and Eveard of West Liberty, and two daughters, Edna, at home, and Mrs. M.S. Albright of Muscatine, besides eight grandchildren.
