A great affliction has befallen Hon. R. M. Burnett, of Muscatine, one of the most prominent men in politics of the State. He has been suffering from disease of the eye for several months past, and last week a surgical operation was performed, removing his right eye entirely. There is no hope; it is said, of saving his eye sight at all. Mr. Burnett is a gentleman of high ambition, and naturally enough is despondent over the prospect of spending the rest of his days in total darkness. He was for many years in the lower branch of the legislature from Muscatine County, where he acquired considerable distinction as a wise and conscientious legislator, and his course will be greatly missed in political circles.
