Joseph Shannon was born 17 Apr 1821/4 in Ireland, and came to America by 1849, settling first in New York, then Cincinnati, Ohio, and finally settling in Muscatine county, Iowa, by 1856.

He married Jane Evitt, also born in Ireland, and there were seven children born to this union: Robert Thomas 1849 - 1918 (Caroline Hechtner); Mary J 1852 - 1891 (Fordyce W Downs); Elizabeth "Lizzie" 1858 - unkn (W J Dietrich); Rita Marie 1856 - 1886 (Dave M Landis); Anna 1854 - 1926 (James S "Scotchy" Smith); Richard J 1862 - unkn (Elizabeth Askam); and Margaret 1866 - 1943 (Dave M Landis).

He was naturalized September 1871, in the Circuit Court of Muscatine County, and renounced allegiance to Victoria Queen of Great Britian.

He died 13 Nov 1891, of apoplexy.
