Robert Thomas Shannon was born 14 Jun 1849, in Cohoes, NY, to Joseph and Jane (Evitt) Shannon. They moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, staying there until they removed to Muscatine county, Iowa, in 1856.

He married Sarah Louisa Adams 1 Sep 1880, in Muscatine county, IA. One son, Clinton Richard 1881 - 1926, was born to this union. His first wife died in 1883.

He married second, Caroline Hechtner, 2 Mar 1885, in Nichols, Muscatine, Iowa. Six children were born to this marriage: Harry Eugene 1895 - 1979 (Amanda Emma Rummells); Isa 1885 - 1961 (Albert L Lindee); Frederick Joseph 1888 - 1961 (Mona M Stapp); Raymond Charles 1890 - 1891; Verda Estelle 1894 - 1965 (Clarence Metcalf); and Lloyd Willard 1899 - 1982 (Mildred Barnes).

He was elected to the Board of SUpervisors of Muscatine County for three terms, and was also a member of the Town Council of Nichols. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge, Stainless Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and the Methodist Episcolpal Church. He owned a grocery store in Nichols, which he sold to J.H. Hintz in 1917.

He died of the Spanish Flu and complications from diabetes on 7 Dec 1918.
