Information on N.N. (Norman), Tessie or Lyman Turner

ALSO MURPHY, COCHRANE, LOMAS, CROFTS

We are trying to trace the history of our house. Of course most of all we are interested in photos and who the architect was (because it is unusual and there are several stories floating around about it). But the more we find out about the people who did the remodel and their place in the community the more interested we are in them as well.

The people who bought the house in 1916 were N.N. (Norman) & Tessie Turner. He owned Turner Brothers Grain, Lumber, and Coal, which was originally located at 417 Coolbaugh St and later moved to Short Street. Some point after they totally gutted the Victorian house that was on the property and made it into the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired Prairie Style home it is today. They had a son J. Lyman Tuner, who went on to marry Josephine Cochrane Turner (daughter of Myrtle Eleanor Murphy and William Cochrane, sister to Anna Lomas and Frances Crofts). After his father-in-laws death Lyman went onto help run the Murphy Calendar Company along with the other two son-in-laws Malcom Lomas and John Crofts. In 1958 the home was purchased by Bessie and George Bates, I have been told she was an artist and had a daughter who may still be living but that is all I know about them.

So far that is pretty much all I have pieced together from the local library, information on the internet and asking local historians. I do have the names of Lyman’s children. Joanna Turner and William Cochrane Turner but have no idea if they are still living or if so where they are. So… We would really love any information anyone has on the house or the family.
