Daniel Mullen 1837 - 1912

Daniel Mullen, a former resident of Elliott but more recently of Red Oak died Thursday, June 13, 1912 at 8:40 p.m., at his home in the northwest part of Red Oak, after an illness of about two months of heart trouble.

He was born near Montreal, Canada April 15, 1837 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ebenezer Mullen. Deceased was married in 1866 at Rockford, Illinois to Lucinda J. Youkers. Besides the wife at nearly half a century deceased leaves six grown children. They are Miles G. Mullen of Corning, Lauren E. Mullen of Grant, Mrs. G.A. Atwood of Council Bluffs, Mrs. G.E. Mercer of Grant, Mrs. L.G. Reynolds of Spokane, Wash., and Elizabeth V. Mullen at home. Three brothers Nathaniel, of California, Levi, of Villisca, and E.B. of Pilot Grove, also survive him.

Mr. Mullen came to Montgomery county in the fall of 1875 and settled on a farm north of Villisca, near where the Holmes Chapel now stands. He moved to Red Oak in the spring of 1905. He was a member of the M.E. Church.

The funeral services were held at the home of at three o'clock Sunday, conducted by Rev. Willis, pastor of the M.E. Church, Rev. Murchie, pastor of the U.P. Church, and Rev. Driver, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. The pallbearers were M.G. Mullen, and L.E. Mullen, sons of deceased; R. Mullen and B. Mullen, nephews, G.E. Mercer and C.A. Atwood, sons-in-law. The singers were Mrs. E. Foster, C. Halber, Glen Ellwood, and Floyd Pratt, with Miss Edson at the piano. Internment was made in the Evergreen cemetery.

Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were Levi Mullen and family of Villisca, E.B. Mullen and family of Pilot Grove, Mrs. T. Posten and mother of Villisca, Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Youkers.
