ENTERED INTO REST.
Death of Rev. J.A. Shankland in the 81st Year of his Age.
Rev. J.A. Shankland died at his home on Corning St., Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, after an illness of some weeks. The funeral services were held at the home on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, the services being conducted by Rev. S.K. DuBois, of the United Presbyterian church.
Rev. J.A. Shankland was in his 81st year; he was born in South Argyle, N.Y., Nov. 16, 1818. He was the last of a family of eight, two brothers and five sisters having preceded him to the other world. His parents came from Scotland. He graduated from Jefferson college at Canonsburgh, Pa., in 1845, and the next year entered a theological seminary, graduating therefrom in 1849. He became a United Presbyterian minister and about 30 years of his life was spent in active ministerial work. He was licensed to preach by the presbytery of Cambridge, Washington county, N.Y., and preached in Michigan until 1851, when lung trouble caused him to stop preaching for several years. He resumed ministerial work in 1868, preaching at Rock Run and Shannon, in Northwestern Illinois. Then he went to Racine county, Wis., and was pastor at Yorkville for nine years, following which he preached at Verona, Dane county, Wis, four years. In 1873 he came to Iowa, preaching at North Page three years. From 1876 to 1878he was pastor at Dunbar, Neb, and afterward preached at Blanchard, Iowa, and at Xork, Mo. His pastoral work closed in 1882, though he continued to preach frequently.
He moved on a farm near Villisca in 1882 and became a resident of Red Oak in 1893. Since coming here he had preached a number of times in the United Presbyterian church, and in the South Side Mission church.
He was married t Mary E. Perry Sept. 7, 1852, who died about a year ago. Seven children were born to them, three sons and four daughters. One of the daughters died three years ago. The surviving children are W.P. Shankland of Lincoln, Neb, Mrs. J.F. Beard of Hendley, Neb, J.V. Shankland of Red Oak, R.J. Shankland of Superior, Neb, Mrs. Mae Steninger of Colorado Springs, Col., and Mrs. S.W. Ivers of Red Oak.
While visiting his son at Superior, Neb, a year ago last summer Rev. Shankland suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he never fully recovered. For the past 15 weeks he had been confined to his bed. His life was well lived. He entered into rest as one who had done what he could. He passed away as in a sleep.
