Caroline Elizabeth (Woodruff) Butterfield

-----------------------

Caroline Elizabeth Woodruff was born in Fort Ann, Washington County, New York, March 21, 1835. She was the oldest of the four children of Walter and Harriett (Vaughn) Woodruff, both parents being members of the oldest families who settled in eastern New York. Only one of this family, Mrs. Melissa Lamb now survives.

She was married on January 1, 1856, to Jeremiah Butterfield , a resident of the same county, and they at once removed west, living in Northern Indiana for several years. In 1861 they went to Indianapolis where they lived until they removed to this place in the spring of 1877.

She entered the Baptist church of Fort Ann, New York, when she was fifteen, and was a faithful worker in all the places where she lived.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Butterfield were: Harriett Sophia, who died in infancy, Dora A. Potter, who died in 1890; Justin Jay, now living in Newport, Rhode Island; Grace Vaughn Woodard, who died in 1902; Hope Woodruff Stokesberry of this place. Mr. Butterfield died in 1889.

In March 1901, Mrs. Butterfield had a sever attack of nervous prostration from which she never fully recovered, but although a constant sufferer, she was able to perform light duties most of the time up to her last illness. On Wednesday morning, July 1st, as she left her room to go to her sister's room, owing to recent changes in the upper rooms, and in the darkness thinking she had passed the stairs she stepped off the landing and fell down to the bottom, sustaining severe sprains and bruises. She was conscious however for almost four hours after which paralysis was brought on from the shock and she became unconscious. She remained in this condition apparently without physical suffering, until at half past ten on the evening of July 3rd she passed quietly and peacefully away.
